Ratana Sutta / The Discourse of The Jewels

yānīdha bhūtāni samāgatāni
bhummāni vā yāni va antalikkhe
sabbe va bhūtā sumanā bhavantu
atho pi sakkacca suṇantu bhāsitaṁ

Whatever beings are assembled here,
terrestrial or celestial,
may they all have peace of mind,
and may they listen attentively to these words:

tasmā hi bhūtā nisāmetha sabbe
mettaṁ karotha mānusiyā pajāya
divā ca ratto ca haranti ye baliṁ
tasmā hi ne rakkhatha appamattā

O beings, listen closely.
May you all show loving-kindness to those human beings
who by day and night, bring offerings to you.
Wherefore, protect them with diligence.

yaṁ kiñci vittaṁ idha vā huraṁ vā
saggesu vā yaṁ ratanaṁ paṇītaṁ
na no samaṁ atthi tathāgatena
idampi buddhe ratanaṁ paṇītaṁ
etena saccena suvatthi hotu

Whatever treasure there be either here or in the world beyond,
whatever precious jewel there be in the heavenly worlds,
nothing is comparable to the Tathagata.
In the Buddha is this precious jewel found.
By this truth may there be happiness.

khayaṁ virāgaṁ amataṁ paṇītaṁ
yadajjhagā sakyamunī samāhito
na tena dhammena samatthi kiñci
idampi dhamme ratanaṁ paṇītaṁ
etena saccena suvatthi hotu

The cessation, the freedom from passion,
the deathlessness and the excellence

has been discovered by the Sakyan Sage in concentration.
Nothing is comparable to this Dhamma.
In the Dhamma is this precious jewel found.
By this truth may there be happiness.

yambuddhaseṭṭho parivaṇṇayī suciṁ
samādhimānantarikaññamāhu
samādhinā tena samo na vijjati
idampi dhamme ratanaṁ paṇītaṁ
etena saccena suvatthi hotu

That pure concentration the Supreme Buddha praised is described as
‘concentration without interruption’.
Nothing is comparable to this concentration.
In the Dhamma is this precious jewel found.
By this truth may there be happiness.

ye puggalā aṭṭha satampasatthā
cattāri etāni yugāni honti
te dakkhiṇeyyā sugatassa sāvakā
etesu dinnāni mahapphalāni
idampi saṅghe ratanaṁ paṇītaṁ
etena saccena suvatthi hotu

The eight kinds of individual which are praised by virtuous men
which consist of four pairs,
they are the disciples of the Buddha and are worthy of offerings.
Gifts given to them yield rich results.
In the Sangha is this precious jewel found.
By this truth may there be happiness.

ye suppayuttā manasā daḷhena
nikkāmino gotamasāsanamhi
te pattipattā amataṁ vigayha
laddhā mudhā nibbutiṁ bhuñjamānā
idampi saṅghe ratanaṁ paṇītaṁ
etena saccena suvatthi hotu

Those who, devoted, firm-minded,

apply themselves to Gotama's message,
on attaining their goal, plunge into the Deathless,
freely enjoying the Liberation they've gained.
In the Sangha is this precious jewel found.
By this truth may there be happiness.

yathindakhīlo paṭhaviṁ sito siyā
catubbhi vātehi asampakampiyo
tathūpamaṁ sappurisaṁ vadāmi
yo ariyasaccāni avecca passati
idampi saṅghe ratanaṁ paṇītaṁ
etena saccena suvatthi hotu

Just like an pillar of Indra which is deep-planted in the earth,
unshaken by the winds from the four directions;
I say that a righteous person who
thoroughly perceives the Noble Truths is similar to that.

In the Sangha is this precious jewel found.
By this truth may there be happiness.

ye ariya saccāni vibhāvayanti
gambhīrapaññena sudesitāni
kiñcāpi te honti bhusappamattā
na te bhavaṁ aṭṭhamamādiyanti
idampi saṅghe ratanaṁ paṇītaṁ
etena saccena suvatthi hotu

Those who clearly understand the Noble Truths,
well taught by Him who has profound wisdom,
do not undergo an eighth birth,
no matter how exceedingly heedless they may be.

In the Sangha is this precious jewel found.
By this truth may there be happiness.

sahā vassa dassanasampadāya
tayassu dhammā jahitā bhavanti
sakkāyadiṭṭhi vicikicchitañca
sīlabbataṁ vā pi yadatthi kiñci
catūhapāyehi ca vippamutto
cha cābhiṭhānāni abhabbo kātuṁ
idampi saṅghe ratanaṁ paṇītaṁ
etena saccena suvatthi hotu

Together with his attainment of insight,
three qualities have been abandoned, namely:
wrong belief in selfhood, doubt

and attachment to rites and ceremonies.
He is absolutely freed from the four states of misery,
and is incapable of commiting the six major wrong doings.

In the Sangha is this precious jewel found.
By this truth may there be happiness.

kiñcāpi so kammaṁ karoti pāpakaṁ
kāyena vācā uda cetasā vā
abhabbo so tassa paṭicchadāya
abhabbatā diṭṭhapadassa vuttā
idampi saṅghe ratanaṁ paṇītaṁ
etena saccena suvatthi hotu

He is incapable of hiding whatever evil he does,
whether by deed, word or thought;
for it has been said that such an act is
impossible for one who has seen the Path.

In the Sangha is this precious jewel found.
By this truth may there be happiness.

vanappagumbe yathā phussitagge
gimhānamāse paṭhamasmiṁ gimhe
tathūpamaṁ dhammavaraṁ adesayi
nibbānagāmiṁ paramaṁhitāya
idampi buddhe ratanaṁ paṇītaṁ
etena saccena suvatthi hotu

Just like a forest crown in full blossom,
in the first month of the summer season,
so has the sublime Dhamma been
taught
for the highest good
that leads to Nibbāna.
In the Buddha is this precious jewel found.
By this truth may there be happiness.

varo varaññū varado varāharo
anuttaro dhammavaraṁ adesayi
idampi buddhe ratanaṁ paṇītaṁ
etena saccena suvatthi hotu

The peerless Excellent One, the Knower, the Giver,
the Bringer of the Excellent, has expounded the sublime Dhamma.
In the Buddha is this precious jewel found.
By this truth may there be happiness.

khīṇaṁ purāṇaṁ navaṁ natthi sambhavaṁ
virattacittāyatike bhavasmiṁ
te khīṇabījā avirūḷhichandā
nibbanti dhīrā yathāyampadīpo
idampi saṅghe ratanaṁ paṇītaṁ
etena saccena suvatthi hotu

Their past is extinct, a new becoming there is not,
their minds are not attached to a future birth, their desires do not grow;
those wise ones with their seeds of becoming destroyed,
go out even as this lamp does.
In the Sangha is this precious jewel found.
By this truth may there be happiness.

yānīdha bhūtāni samāgatāni
bhummāni vā yāni va antalikkhe
tathāgataṁ devamanussapūjitaṁ
buddhaṁ namassāma suvatthi hotu

Whatever beings that are assembled here,
whether terrestrial or celestial,

Let us all, all devas and men, honor the Tathagata.
By worshiping the Buddha, may there be happiness.

yānīdha bhūtāni samāgatāni
bhummāni vā yāni va antalikkhe
tathāgataṁ devamanussapūjitaṁ
dhammaṁ namassāma suvatthi hotu

Whatever beings that are assembled here,
whether terrestrial or celestial,

Let us all, all devas and men, honor the Tathagata.
By worshiping the Dhamma, may there be happiness

yānīdha bhūtāni samāgatāni
bhummāni vā yāni va antalikkhe
tathāgataṁ devamanussapūjitaṁ
saṅghaṁ namassāma suvatthi hotu

Whatever beings that are assembled here,
whether terrestrial or celestial,

Let us all, all devas and men, honor the Tathagata.
By worshiping the Sangha, may there be happiness
